Giovanni Battista DAGNINO (PhD) is Chair of Management and Professor of Digital Strategy at the University of Rome LUMSA, Palermo Campus, where he is the Founder and Academic Director of LUMSA International Research Center for Artificial Intelligence Management, the Founding Director of the MSc Program in Economics and Management , Chaired the LUMSA Digital Hub, and founded and chaired the Department Sustainability Committee.
He is Co-Director of LUMSA EMBA-Executive Master of Business Administration , Member of the Scientific Board of LUMSA Master School, Member of LUMSA Sustainability Committee , and Member of LUMSA Human Academy Foundation Scientific Committee.
In addition, he has served as Italian Academy of Management Board Governor for two terms or six years, and as University of Palermo Disciplinary Council Member. He is serving as Italian Society of Management School of Research Methods Academic Director ,as well as Italian Society of Management Coordinator of the Thematic Group “AI in management”.
He is Co-Editor of the Journal of Management and Governance since January 2020.
Professor Dagnino is known internationally for his pioneering work and a stream of seminal publications in two relevant areas: (1) coopetition strategy , a field of study and practice he contributed to set off over a decade ago; and (2) the kickoff and extension of temporary competitive advantage . In addition, he has published widely in a third strand (3), where is conducting a series of smart projects : digital transformation strategy and digital mindset, the management of AI and big dat a analytics.
His publication portfolio includes over 230 publications : 180 academic contributions and 50 op-eds in the economic, financial and managerial press. He has authored/edited 17 books and over 140 articles/book chapters in leading collective volumes and management journals such as Academy of Management Perspectives , California Management Review , Global Strategy Journal , Journal of Management , Long Range Planning , Organization Studies , and Strategic Management Journal .
Since 2018 he has been teaching “Digital Strategy & Marketing “ and “Corporate Governance & Sustainable Leadership “ in the core graduate curriculum, and since 2023-24 “Sustainable Platforms and Social Media Management ” as an elective. He is also teaching “Theorizing Digital Strategy ” in the PhD Program.
He serves/d as faculty member of the European Institute for Advanced Studies in Management in Brussels, Fellow of the Strategic Planning Society in London, Friend of the European Investment Bank Institute in Luxembourg, and Friend of the Strategic Management Society in Chicago.
He has held multiple visiting positions in several internationally recognized institutions, such as Harvard Business School, Tuck School of Business at Dartmouth, Wharton School, London Business School, IE Business School, IESE Business School, Grenoble Ecole de Management, Macquarie University Business School, the University of Mannheim , University of York, and IAE Business School , Universidad Austral, Buenos Aires. Prior to joining LUMSA, he has been Professor of Business Economics and Management at the University of Catania, Italy. At the University of Catania, he had multiple appointments: member of the University Evaluation Commission, member of the University Spinoff Board, Deputy Chair, Interim Chair, and Dean of Research of the Department of Economics and Business, Coordinator of the PhD Program in Economics and Management, and Academic Director of GRIM-Group of Research on Insurance and Banking Economics and Management.
He has organized four international conferences with the Strategic Management Society

Since 2004 he has pioneered the EIASM Workshop Series on Coopetition Strategy and chaired/co-chaired six consecutive editions of this biennial venue: Catania (2004); Milan’s SDA Bocconi (2006); Madrid’s Carlos III University (2008); Montpellier I University (2010); Katowice’s University of Economics (2012); and University of Umea, Sweden (2014).

He has served in multiple leadership positions in both the Academy of Management and the Strategic Management Society . At the Strategic Management Society (SMS), he was Chair, Program Chair, Associate Program Chair, and representative-at-large of the Cooperative Strategies Interest Group, and served as representative-at-large of the Competitive Strategy Interest Group. At the Academy of Management, he has been member of the Executive Committee of the Strategic Management Division as well as a five-year member of the Carolyn Dexter Award Selection Committee.
He has received several prestigious research grants and academic recognition for his scientific work, including the Academy of Management Best Papers Proceedings (twice), the Academy of Management Strategic Management Division Outstanding Reviewer Award , the Compagnia di San Paolo Luciano Jona Scholarship, the National Research Council Research Fellowship , as well as nominations for the Academy of Management Emerald Best International Symposium Award and the Strategic Management Society Annual Conference Best Paper Prize. He has been the recipient of the LUMSA Best Researcher Award and the University of Catania Teaching Development Program Award, both for two consecutive years.
