Giovanni Battista DAGNINO (PhD) is Chair of Management and Professor of Digital Strategy at the University of Rome LUMSA, Palermo Campus, where he is the Founding Director of the MSc Program in Economics and Management, Chaired the Scientific Committee of LUMSA Digital Hub, and Founded the Departmental Committee on Sustainability.             

He is Co-Director of LUMSA EMBA-Executive Master of Business AdministrationMember of the Scientific Board of LUMSA Master School, Member of LUMSA Sustainability Committee, and Member of Scientific Committee of LUMSA Human Academy Foundation.

In addition, he has served as Italian Academy of Management Board Governor for two terms or six years, and is serving as University of Palermo Disciplinary Council Member, Italian Society of Management School of Research Methods Academic Director,as well as Italian Society of Management Coordinator of the Thematic Group “AI in management”.

He is Co-Editor of the Journal of Management and Governance since January 2020.

Professor Dagnino is known internationally for his pioneering work and a stream of seminal publications in two relevant areas: (1) coopetitionstrategy, a field of study and practice he contributed to set off over a decade ago; and (2) the kickoff and extension of temporary competitive advantage. In addition, he has published widely in a third strand (3), where is conducting a series of smart projects:digital transformation strategy, phygital transition, digital mindset, and the management of AI, big data and advanced analytics.

His publication portfolio includes over 220 publications: 180 academic contributions and 40 op-eds in the economic, financial and managerial press. He has authored/edited 15 books and over 130 articles/book chapters in leading collective volumes and management journals such as Academy of Management PerspectivesCalifornia Management Review, Global Strategy JournalLong Range PlanningOrganization Studies, and Strategic Management Journal.

Since 2018 he has been teaching “Digital Strategy & Marketing“ and “Corporate Governance & Sustainable Leadership“ in the core graduate curriculum, and since 2023 “Sustainable Platforms and Social Media Management” as an elective. He is also teaching “Theorizing Digital Strategy” in the PhD Program.

He serves/d as faculty member of the European Institute for Advanced Studies in Management in Brussels, Fellow of the Strategic Planning Society in London, Friend of the European Investment Bank Institute in Luxembourg, and Friend of the Strategic Management Society in Chicago.

He has held multiple visiting positions in several internationally recognized institutions, such as Harvard Business School, Tuck School of Business at Dartmouth, Wharton School, London Business School, IE Business School, IESE Business School, Grenoble Ecole de Management, the University of Mannheim, and IAE Business School, Universidad Austral, Buenos Aires. Prior to joining LUMSA, he has been Professor of Business Economics and Management at the University of Catania, Italy. At the University of Catania, he had multiple appointments: member of the University Evaluation Commission, member of the University Spinoff Board, Deputy Chair, Interim Chair, and Dean of Research of the Department of Economics and Business, Coordinator of the PhD Program in Economics and Management, and Academic Director of GRIM-Group of Research on Insurance and Banking Economics and Management.

He has been co-chair of threeStrategic Management Society (SMS) Conferences. The SMSSpecial Conference, “Strategy Challenges in the XXI Century: Innovation, Entrepreneurship and Coopetition”, Rome, Italy, June 5-7, 2016; the 30th Anniversary SMS Annual Conference “Strategic Management at the Crossroads” (Rome 2010), and the SMS Special Conference “New Frontiers in Entrepreneurship: Strategy Governance and Evolution” (Catania 2007). He has also co-convened the International Workshop entitled “Private Equity and Entrepreneurship. Mobilizing Capital for Fostering Firm Growth in Italy’s Southern Regions” (Taormina 2008). With Sharon Alvarez (University of Pittsburgh) and Jay Barney (University of Utah), he has been co-chair of the First International Entrepreneurship Research Exemplars Conference “Entrepreneurial Ecosystems and the Diffusion of Start Ups”, co-sponsored by the Academy of Management, Entrepreneurship Division, and the University of Catania, Catania, Italy, May 23-25, 2013. Since 2004 he has pioneered the EIASM Workshop Series on Coopetition Strategy and chaired/co-chaired six consecutive editions of this biennial venue: Catania (2004); Milan’s SDA Bocconi (2006); Madrid’s Carlos III University (2008); Montpellier I University (2010); Katowice’s University of Economics (2012); and University of Umea, Sweden (2014).

He has been Associate Editor of Long Range Planning, and serves/d on the editorial boards of outlets such as: Academy of Management Review (2017-2020), Strategic Management Journal (2009-to date), Long Range Planning (2007-2012), Journal of Management and Governance (2011-2019), International Journal of Strategic Business AlliancesInternational Studies of Management and Organization (2011-2018)American Journal of BusinessJournal of Entrepreneurship, Business and Economics Journal of Industrial and Business Economics, Sustainability, and Piccola Impresa/Small Business, as well as in the scientific advisory board of Grenoble Ecole de Management (2008-2012).

He has served as guest editor for thirteen special issues of international outlets, such as Strategic Management JournalLong Range PlanningInternational Studies of Management and Organization (2 times), Journal of Management and Governance (2 times), Small Business EconomicsGlobal Strategy JournalCalifornia Management Review, Strategic Management ReviewBusiness & Society, and Management Research.

He has served in multiple leadership positions in both the Academy of Management and the Strategic Management Society. At the Strategic Management Society (SMS), he was Chair, Program Chair, Associate Program Chair, and representative-at-large of the Cooperative Strategies Interest Group, and served as representative-at-large  of the Competitive Strategy Interest Group. At the Academy of Management, he has been member of the Executive Committee of the Strategic Management Division as well as a five-year member of the Carolyn Dexter Award Selection Committee.

He has received several prestigious research grants and academic recognition for his scientific work, including the Academy of Management Best Papers Proceedings  (twice), the Academy of Management Strategic Management Division Outstanding Reviewer Award, the Compagnia di San Paolo Luciano Jona Scholarship, the National Research Council Research Fellowship, as well as nominations for the Academy of Management Emerald Best International Symposium Award and the Strategic Management Society Annual Conference Best Paper Prize. He has been the recipient of the LUMSA Best Researcher Award and the University of Catania Teaching Development Program Award, both for two consecutive years. His portfolio shows other significant international awards: (a) the Special Recognition for Publishing Influential Work on Coopetition Studies in the decade 2004-2014, presented by the Global Coopetition Research Network at the University of Umea; (b) the Academy of Management International Management Division CGIO Best Paper in International Corporate Governance; (c) the Strategic Management Society Cooperative Strategies Interest Group Distinguished Service Award; (d) the Strategic Management Society Outstanding Service Award for Chairing the Cooperative Strategies Interest Group; (e) the Wiley Certificate for Top Cited Article 2020-21; as well as (f) the Wiley Certificate for Top Downloaded Article 2019-2020 for the International Journal of Management Reviews article on temporary advantages that generated immediate impact in the community-at-large.

Professor Dagnino has developed a significant experience in scientific research evaluation at the international level (British Academy of Management, Social Science and Humanities Research Council of Canada, Danish Research Council, National Science Center of Poland, Research Council of Norway, National Agency for the Evaluation of Italian Universities and Research Institutes) and is a member of various globally-reputed professional bodies, such as the Academy of Management (since 1996), the European Academy of Management (Founding Member), the Entrepreneurship Research Society (Founding Scholar), the European Corporate Governance Institute (since 2018), the Italian Academy of Management (since 2001), the Italian Society of Management (Founding Member), the Industry Studies Association, the International Joseph A. Schumpeter Society, and the Strategic Management Society (since 1999).
