Researcher in Developmental and Educational Psychology (PSIC-02/A)
LUMSA University – Palermo Campus
Academic Profile
Lidia Scifo is a researcher in Developmental and Educational Psychology at LUMSA University. Her research focuses on developmental and learning processes in educational settings, with particular emphasis on the cognitive and linguistic precursors of literacy, reading comprehension, Specific Learning Disorders, typical and atypical development, and educational inclusion in schools and universities.
A second line of research examines the interaction between psychosocial development, digital technologies, and educational environments. Within this field, she investigates media literacy, digital citizenship, responsible social media use, emotional intelligence, and the risk and protective factors associated with adolescents’ online experiences. Her work also addresses teacher education, educational innovation, and the design of evidence-based educational interventions.
She earned a PhD in Psychology under an international cotutelle agreement between the University of Palermo and the Universidad de La Laguna, Tenerife. Her doctoral research investigated risk predictors and the skills involved in learning to read and write during the preschool years. She has conducted research at the Institute for Educational Technology of the Italian National Research Council and has contributed to national and international projects on child development, inclusion, digital education, and adolescent well-being.
She is a member of the international coordination team of ManyBabies 9 – Perceptual Specialization, a multi-laboratory project examining how early experience shapes face perception and discrimination. She has authored national and international scientific publications and serves in editorial and peer-review roles in developmental and educational psychology.

Research Projects and Collaborations
ManyBabies 9 – Perceptual Specialization
She is a member of the international coordination team of ManyBabies 9, a project of the ManyBabies consortium. ManyBabies is a collaborative network bringing together hundreds of researchers and laboratories across multiple countries to conduct large-scale, multi-laboratory studies in developmental psychology in accordance with Open Science principles.
MB9 investigates how experience during the first months of life shapes face perception and discrimination and the progressive organisation of early social categories. The project examines perceptual specialisation, the developmental process through which infants become increasingly sensitive to stimuli that are more frequently encountered in their environment. More specifically, it investigates whether and to what extent this process develops differently in infants growing up in multiracial or multiethnic family and social contexts compared with infants growing up in monoracial or monoethnic contexts.
The study explores the relationship between early perceptual experience, the cognitive organisation of social information, and the formation of early social categories. These processes are relevant to understanding the developmental foundations of social cognition and the cognitive precursors that may contribute, over the course of development, to representations of social groups, stereotypes, and prejudice. The knowledge generated may also inform the design of early educational interventions aimed at promoting inclusion, respect for differences, and intercultural coexistence from early childhood.
The study will involve research laboratories worldwide and will employ a shared, preregistered experimental protocol to produce robust, transparent, and replicable findings. As a member of the coordination team, she contributes to the project’s scientific development, the definition of the shared protocol, and the planning of collaborative activities across participating laboratories.

The project developed and investigated technological strategies and tools designed to foster media literacy, digital well-being, and responsible social media use among students aged 11–18.
